At Baston House, we believe that every child has the potential to flourish when they are understood, valued and given the right support to shine.
Every learner is different. They have their own personality, strengths, interests, communication style and way of seeing the world. Our curriculum celebrates these differences and creates opportunities for every child to experience success, build confidence and discover what they can achieve.
Our three learner styles – Sapling (Exposure), Tree (Exploration) and Forest (Enquire) — help us tailor learning to each individual child. Whether a pupil is taking their first steps in exploring the world, developing new skills or becoming increasingly independent, we meet them where they are and support them to take their next step. We want learning to be something children enjoy, experience and remember.
Our rich, engaging themes bring learning to life, connecting subjects with the world around us. Through sensory experiences, practical activities, play, communication, creativity and real-life opportunities, pupils are encouraged to explore, discover and make sense of their world.
Every child’s journey is unique. We celebrate small steps as well as big achievements, always building on individual strengths while supporting the areas identified in their EHCP.
At the heart of Baston House is our belief that every child deserves to be heard and understood. Our Total Communication Approach gives pupils a range of ways to communicate, including speech, signing, symbols, visuals, gestures and objects of reference. We listen to each child and find the approaches that help them express their needs, ideas, feelings and personality.
Through Ask–Accept–Develop, pupils are encouraged to take the lead, make choices and influence their learning. We give them the time, space and encouragement to develop their confidence and independence.
Our Trauma Informed Approach ensures that children feel safe, secure and cared for. We build trusting relationships, create predictable environments and support emotional regulation, helping pupils feel ready to learn and able to thrive.
Our teaching and clinical teams work closely together, embedding therapeutic support naturally into everyday learning and routines. This helps pupils develop communication, sensory regulation, physical development and the practical skills they need to become more independent.
At Baston House, we know that progress is personal. For one child, it might be saying a new word. For another, it might be making a choice, building a friendship, trying something new or taking their first step towards greater independence. We celebrate every one of these moments.
Our aim is not simply to prepare pupils for their next stage of education. It is to help them develop the confidence, communication, resilience, independence and life skills they need to enjoy meaningful, fulfilling lives.
Above all, we want every child who comes to Baston House to feel safe, understood, valued and proud of who they are – knowing that they belong, that their voice matters and that we believe in their potential.
In addition to key skills and thinking skills, pupils will need to develop a range of skills which may form priority areas of learning in a range of contexts. Some of these skills are cross curricular but others might be specific to individual pupils in a particular age group.
A key factor in every child’s learning and well-being is the teacher, and we have highly experienced, skilled, dedicated and committed teaching teams and support staff. These teams work together to provide flexibility in meeting the needs of all learners. Our teams work together to provide a safe and engaging environment.
Fundamental to the Baston House School approach is our commitment to personalise the curriculum to the unique qualities and needs of each pupil. Our curriculum has the flexibility to address the individual and very specific needs of each pupil, which will promote the well-being and development of the whole individual.
A range of prominent visual strategies, including highly structured work-systems, predictable changes, phase timings, engaging and appealing learning environments supports our curriculum delivery.
